What is Chichén Itzá and why is it famous?
Chichén Itzá is one of Mexico's most important archaeological sites and one of the best-preserved Mayan cities in the world. Located in the state of Yucatán, it was once a major political, religious and commercial centre of the Maya civilisation.
Today it welcomes millions of visitors every year. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, since 2007, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Its best-known monument is the Pyramid of Kukulkán, also called El Castillo. However, the archaeological site also includes the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Warriors, El Caracol Observatory and the Sacred Cenote.

The time of day and season can make a big difference. Chichén Itzá can get very hot and crowded, so planning ahead is important.Best time of day
Try to arrive early, ideally between 8:00 and 9:00. It is usually less crowded, cooler and better for photos.
Hours to avoid
Between 10:30 and 15:00 it is often hotter and many tour groups arrive. If possible, avoid this time window.
Best season
From November to April the weather is usually more pleasant. Summer can be very hot, and during the rainy season extra protection is recommended.
Best days
If possible, avoid weekends, public holidays and school vacations. Weekdays are usually more relaxed.
